Definition

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are naturally occurring growth factors that promote bone regeneration. In limb lengthening, BMP (particularly BMP-2 and BMP-7) is sometimes used as a biological adjunct to accelerate consolidation in cases of delayed healing or non-union. BMP is typically applied directly to the bone gap during a surgical procedure. Its use in limb lengthening remains largely investigational and is not standard care for most patients.
