Definition
Osteomyelitis is infection involving bone. Diagnosis can require clinical examination, imaging, laboratory tests, and microbiologic sampling. Treatment depends on organism, acute or chronic presentation, stability, dead tissue, blood supply, and retained implants and can include antimicrobial therapy and surgery. It is not defined by a fixed course of intravenous antibiotics.
