In brief
Can adults get taller after their growth plates close?
Once growth plates have closed, stretching does not lengthen adult bones. Posture can change how tall you appear. Limb lengthening can increase bone length through major surgery, with risks and lengthy follow-up. Age alone cannot confirm remaining growth or suitability for surgery.

What changes when growth finishes?
Growing taller in childhood involves growth plates: regions of cartilage where bones become longer. NIH growth researchers explain that this process slows and eventually ends. A birthday is an imperfect substitute for a clinical growth assessment; delayed puberty and other growth patterns can differ. [1] [2]
Can stretching, yoga, or hanging make an adult taller?
Cleveland Clinic distinguishes posture from bone length: stretching may help a person stand or appear more upright, but it does not restart growth in mature bones. A photograph or a different standing position cannot show that leg bones have grown. [3]
A clinician explains the distinction
"Improving your posture can help you look taller," says sports medicine specialist Lauren Wichman, MD, in Cleveland Clinic's July 8, 2026 article. The statement concerns appearance and posture, not new adult bone length. [3]
What about height supplements or growth hormone?
A nutrient claim is not proof of adult height gain. FDA guidance distinguishes supplements from medicines and advises discussing their use with a health professional. For a product claiming extra centimeters, ask whether its study involved adults with closed growth plates, measured lasting bone-length change, and reported harms. The sources here do not establish that a supplement reopens closed growth plates. [4]
The Endocrine Society describes medical evaluation and hormone treatments for particular childhood growth disorders. Those indications are not evidence for self-prescribed hormones to increase a fully grown adult's height. If growth or puberty seems delayed, seek an appropriate medical assessment rather than assuming a cosmetic procedure is the next step. [2]
Is there a surgery to get taller?
Yes. Stature lengthening, also called cosmetic height increase surgery, changes leg-bone length by dividing bone and gradually separating the segments while new bone forms. It is major orthopedic treatment, involving monitoring, rehabilitation, and possible complications. It is a different process from natural growth or improving posture. [5]
Our height surgery introduction explains the process and practical commitments. If the question is appearance, the body-proportions guide explains what measurements can describe without defining an ideal body. Choosing no procedure is also a valid decision; short stature alone does not establish a need for treatment.
Questions that help evaluate a height claim
Identify what changed: bare-foot standing measurement, posture, footwear, or actual bone length. Check who was studied, how the result was measured, and whether the source is a controlled study, a clinic statement, or an individual story. A before-and-after image, supplement advertisement, or device name cannot answer all of these questions.
FAQ
Can I grow taller after 18?
Age 18 does not establish whether an individual's growth plates have closed. Remaining growth depends on development and any underlying condition. Once growth is finished, stretching is not a way to lengthen bones. A clinician can assess a genuine growth concern. [1] [2] [3]
Can posture correction permanently lengthen my legs?
Posture and bone length are different. Standing more upright may change appearance, but it does not lengthen mature leg bones. [3]
Does being short mean I should consider surgery?
No. Height alone does not establish a medical need, eligibility, or likely benefit from surgery. Any surgical discussion must consider health, anatomy, goals, risks, support, and the option of no procedure. [5]
